Congratulations to our recent graduates!

"I recently took the signing leader certificate level 1 ASL course from Jenny and absolutely loved it. I took ASL in high school years ago but this reignited my love for ASL and Deaf culture. If you have wanted to learn ASL, take the class from her, you won’t regret it! In this accelerated experience, you learn so much and go deeper than I thought we could’ve in just five weeks. Now I can communicate with Deaf people and feel confident doing so."

"I’ve always had an interest in learning ASL and supporting the Deaf community in some way, especially because I work with students who have limited communication and use ASL as a tool to communicate.ASL is such a beautiful language and Professor Jenny is a fantastic teacher. I was little intimidated and nervous learning a new language, especially ASL because I’m older and wasn’t confident about my ability to pick up the signs quickly or adequately enough, however Jenny made learning ASL easy to learn and understand. She covered each sign we learned so thoroughly and took the time to go over everything we learned each week and reviewed things that we were unsure about each class. She also encouraged questions and was open to chat with you 1:1 if you had specific questions or concerns about anything. I’m so glad I took this signing course. I learned so much in 5 weeks and feel confident that I could have a beginning conversation in ASL with someone who is Deaf."

How ASL Helps Children Communicate Earlier

Young children often understand language before they are able to speak it. For many children, the physical ability to produce spoken words develops later than their ability to think, understand, and communicate ideas. American Sign Language provides young children with a visual and physical way to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings during this stage of development.

Using simple signs allows children to communicate basic messages such as more, help, eat, drink, all done, and please before they are able to say the words verbally. This early communication can reduce frustration for children and caregivers while supporting positive social interactions in the classroom.

In early childhood classrooms, sign language can be especially helpful for children who are:

  • preverbal or late talkers

  • developing speech and language skills

  • learning English as an additional language

  • benefiting from visual supports for communication

Research and classroom experience both show that using sign language alongside spoken language can support language development rather than delay it. When educators model simple signs while speaking, children begin connecting visual language with spoken words, strengthening their overall communication skills.

By introducing American Sign Language in everyday classroom routines, educators give children an additional tool to express themselves, participate in learning, and build confidence in communication.
